today is #WorldMentalHealthDay, and my latest single, ‘Before The Fall’, is available now, wherever you listen to music — a portion of proceeds will be donated to @CMHASaskatoon.

this piece began as a collaborative experimentation with armenbazarian at the @banffcentre in 2016. we explored unique ways of recording vocals, as well as an old harmonium (wind-based keyboard — for lack of a better description) that we had the opportunity to mess around with in the studio.

armen played a beautiful melodic hook on an upright felted piano, and freestyled a melody using vocal sounds resembling words. i then treated his vocal takes as a sampled instrument, manipulating them within ableton to create various chords, textures, and melody. i actually didn’t think about this until now, but this was probably the first time i manipulated vocals in such a fashion. you can hear this experimentation primarily in the middle section of the piece.

the harmonium ended up serving as a beautifully unique bed of chords that carry you into the final swell. we also recorded the antique-like instrument’s various mechanical switches and knobs, which through some extensive audio warping and fx, exclusively make up the entirety of the track’s drum sounds. these same sounds serve as the drum samples for two other tracks from the upcoming album (II) as well.

upon returning to the project many years later, i re-recorded the vocals, finding & creating words out of what Armen sang while adhering closely to his phonetics, rhythm and tune. i was able to arrive at something that not only embodied the meaning and vibe of the song itself, but succinctly captured the narrative of the album with what would be the only few lyrics heard over its entire 1.5 hour running time.
